With accommodation in the Dingle Skellig Hotel and the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill, you have two fantastic hotels in ideal locations to allow you the freedom to explore the west of Ireland at your own pace, in your own car. DAY 1 Depart the US on your overnight transatlantic flight to Shannon, Ireland. DAY 2 Arrive Shannon airport early am, where you will pick up your rental car and travel to the southwest town of Dingle. On route you may wish to visit Limerick city - home of Angles Ashes fame, Adare Heritage town or Tralee.
Today is an optional day for activity in Dingle. You will at first be taken by the dramatic physical appearance of the Dingle Peninsula. Images of Inch or Brandon Bay, the view of the Blaskets from Slea Head… there are countless breathtaking views. For those you wish to explore more, the region will be found shy! The walker and cyclist have a wealth of hills, mountains, cliffs and miles of quiet roadways to enjoy. The sea lover can swim, fish, boat, dive and snorkel. Superb links courses for the golfers and trail and beach riding for the equestrian enthusiast… Dingle is a lot of things to a lot of people. It can be hectic - full of activity or it can be quiet and reflective. Try and sample both sides.
One of the most spectacular scenic drives in Ireland is Slea Head - a circular tour starting and finishing in Dingle town made up of narrow country roads and some of the finest scenery in the world. Or perhaps you may wish to visit the Blasket Islands, these hold a unique place among the Gaelic islands and it's population has contributed enormously to Irish folk writing, folklore, song and dance.
Depart Dingle and travel over the Connor Pass. At over 400m the Connor Pass is one of Ireland's highest, and many would say, most dramatic public road passes. The Connor pass can only be traveled by car as a the road is to narrow for a coach! Be prepared to be held up behind cows and sheep! Travel across the Shannon Estuary by ferry at Tarbert to Clare and continue along the coast to the Cliffs of Moher. Continue on through the Burren to Galway to the Galway Bay Hotel in Salt Hill DAY 6 Galway - the City of the tribes. Today take some time in the city of Galway. Galway is noted for its traditional Irish music and song, and there's a wide range of activities and amenities, from secluded sandy beaches and beautiful scenery to sports for all. Galway nestles at the neck of Galway Bay and is reputed to have been Columbus' final point of departure on his epoch-making voyage of discovery. DAY 7 Your last full day in Ireland - spend it touring the wild and beautiful region of mountains, lakes, tumbling streams undulating bog, unspoilt beaches and panoramic views of Connemara by foot, bicycle or horseback or perhaps take the ferry a short distance to the Aran Islands, renowned for preserving traditional ways of life. DAY 8 Depart for Shannon Airport, for your homeward bound transatlantic flight. Or... Continue by train to Dublin for an optional 2 night extension in the Capital City.
