The Esker Riada is an unusual phenomenon, an ice age deposit of sand hills which stretch for about 70 miles down through the Irish Midlands. Esker Hills Golf and Country Club is a maze of tumbling hills and wildly pitching fairways and greens. It opened in 1996 and has already established a reputation for its tough challenge with midland golfers and a growing number of visitors from overseas. The course runs a championship distance at 6669 yards and includes 11 par 4's and 3 par 5's. The strength of Esker Hills is not only in its unusual undulating terrain, but three of the par 4's are well in excess of 420 yards. In the words of Christy O'Connor Jnr. "Designing Esker Hills gave me enormous satisfaction, plotting the course through natures own sand-hills and valleys. Esker Hills is the only inland links type course I know of, which makes Winter golf a pleasure.
