The last quarter mile to the Cahernane Hotel is through a tunnel of greenery which frames its long private avenue - an approach that helps you find a slower sweeter tempo in time with its tranquillity. Formerly the residence of the Earls of Pembroke, the present house dates from 1877 and, in addition to impressive and comfortable reception rooms (with log fires), it features many grandly spacious bedrooms elegantly furnished, together with an extension tastefully designed to blend with it's older sister and offering individual modern rooms and suites. Award winning menus in two gracious dining rooms - the Herbert and Pembroke rooms - and a charming cellar bar complete the indoor attractions. Well, not quite- for there is a highly impressive wine cellar, listing over 300 well-judged wines, including Cahernane's exclusive selection from Italian vineyards. Outside and locally there is tennis and golf and the scenic charms of lovely Lough Leane, principal lake in Killarney's glittering necklace where, if it's not too much of a conceit, the wise old peaks of Mangerton, Torc and McGillicuddy seem to graze on their own reflections with satisfaction.
